Gmail Issue: Sign-in attempt prevented

Karen Waldroff | email Dec 22 2015, 11:25 AM
When trying to send an email using Gmail, I received the error "There was an error sending the email: Sending the email to the following server failed: smtp.gmail.com:465" within LandlordMax. I then received an email from gmail that said: "Sign-in attempt prevented. Someone just tried to sign in to your Google Account from an app that doesn't meet modern security standards." Is this new and something you are working on?

Hi Karen,

This is actually a security setting that Google has put in place for all Gmail account for at least a few years. Basically you have to enable external access of your Gmail account to be able to connect any software to it. By default this is turned off, which resulted in what you're seeing. You therefore have to enable this setting.

Although Google claims this setting is for less secure apps the reality is that it's for all apps that don't use their OAuth 2.0 protocol which Google is trying to enforce. Basically Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo mail use this protocol but all other email servers tend to use the standard email protocols as provided within the software. OAuth 2.0 authentication is basically a two-legged authentication system: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7561631/oauth-2-0-benefits-and-use-cases-why That being said a lot of people don't agree with this including the person who originally came up with and designed the OAuth 2.0 specification: http://hueniverse.com/2012/07/26/oauth-2-0-and-the-road-to-hell/

All that to say if you want to use most software with Gmail, Hotmail, and/or Yahoo mail you will most likely have to adjust your settings within Gmail. We normally don't include the direct link because it can change, but you can allow software systems to connect to your Gmail account using standard email protocols by turning off this feature at: https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps Additionally if you want you can find the instructions from Google at: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

I'm trying to test the free service but for some reason it will not allow me to. It's asking for a username and License
nothing was email to me so I have nothing to enter in to these two boxes.

Thanks,

Hi Rose,

When you say a password do you mean an actual password or the license code? I ask because many people confuse the two and they mean very different things.

The information for a password can be found at: http://www.landlordmax.com/support/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=110 And the information for the license code can be found at:http://www.landlordmax.com/support/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=112

If you can confirm which of the two it is we will be better able to assist you.
